The idea of renovating has gone through the mind of any homeowner. You may have lived in your home for many years or purchased it yesterday, and regardless of which of these two it is, you may have thought about renovations.
Needing and wanting to renovate your home are two different things. Fulfilling your wish about remodeling is relatively easy these days. With home improvement loan rates being decently acceptable, you can take this route and do as you please.
On the other hand, there’s the “needing” part, and there are a few clear signs that your home needs renovation.
Your Roof Is Out of Shape
Living in a house means you’re entirely responsible for the condition of your roof and it’s one of the several signs you need to renovate.
If you live in an area with a lot of rain and notice that your roof is leaking, you’re looking at a sign. Running around the house with buckets only minimizes damage to other parts, but it doesn’t solve the problem.
In some cases, you may notice the roof sagging without noticing any leaks. It’s another sign, and not seeing a leak doesn’t mean you never will. A sagging roof means there’s structural damage, which is a few steps away from collapsing.
The Exterior Has Seen Netter Days
Similar to the roof, the exterior of your home takes a lot of beating. Over the years, it gets exposed to the elements, so it’s not uncommon for it to pick up some damage.
Things like faded paint or cracks on the exterior are common in homes that need renovations. Paint-related issues aren’t a massive concern because they just look bad. Cracks, on the other hand, mean you may see wet spots on the inside.
Damaged Floor
The floor is one of the most used parts of any home. Walking over it isn’t something terrible, but moving furniture around is. Even with the proper protection, you’ll still be able to see some damage where you dragged a sofa or a bed.
Seeing scratch marks or spots where the roof leaked are a few signs that you’ll need to renovate, starting with the floor.
Even though tiled floors are generally more durable than wooden ones, they’re still not immune. There are countless different ways in which they pick up damage over the years.
Plumbing Issues
Considering that plumbing covers all aspects of your home related to water, it’s a wide topic. Older homes may experience dirty water from the faucets or, in some cases, even clogged ones.
This is due to the old piping network, which needs replacement. Older pipes also increase the risk of flooding from damaged pipes or valves.
Problems with the drain are another sign that your home needs renovations. Seeing the water go down slowly can be a reason for concern. If it happens only on one drainage, then it’s a localized problem. If you’re seeing it throughout your home, then it’s time for an upgrade.
Draft or Difficulty Reaching the Desired Temperature
In this regard, several things you may notice indicate that your home needs some renovation. A draft is a common one, meaning you have a bad seal on your windows or doors.
Regions with extremely hot or cold temperatures mean you’re relying on that seal to keep the inside temperature as you want it. This will also result in higher electricity bills, which can cost a lot in the long run.
In both cases, this is the result of a bent frame, leaving you with no other option than to replace them. A well-insulated home will be more efficient, so it’s one of those renovations that will pay off.
Flaking Paint
Seeing flakes of paint on the walls isn’t a good sign, but it’s one that you need to consider renovating. In many cases, this happens due to humidity and the paint looks like its pealing from the walls. Even though it’s common in bathrooms, the other parts of your home aren’t immune to it.
This is one of those situations where you won’t have to worry about how much you’ll spend. Repainting the walls isn’t overly expensive, and it’s a common DIY project with many homeowners. That said, if there are other areas of your home that need improvement, then you can combine and do everything at once.
You Need More Space
This aspect is more of a personal necessity, but it can still be a solid sign that you need to renovate your home. A baby on the way, a new job that requires you to have a home office, or a larger kitchen are only a few situations where you’ll need to consider renovating.
Unlike some of the other examples, this is a significantly larger renovation project, especially if you live in a house and plan to expand.
